In the 2017-18 season, the SPCC Junior program expanded further training sessions for junior curlers and piloted extra programs on Saturdays.
These sessions were 2 hours in duration with 1 hour focus on drills and 1 hour of game play. With the positive response and an increased interest by junior curlers to curl more during the week, the SPCC will be running a JUNIOR PLUS program in the 2018-19 season with the additional components:
- Tuesday - Technical review & drills - Athletes will participate with on ice delivery support rotating every two weeks (twice a month) FALL only (Sept - Dec)
- Thursday - Dryland fitness training at GARC studio lead by qualified Fitness Tech every week starting Sept 27
- Friday - private practice ice for junior plus athletes
- Saturday - 5 sessions with focus on mental training, guest elite curlers presentations and team drills.
This program is aimed for junior curlers that have a desire to broaden their overall skill set, develop as a dynamic player at any position and compete in the AB Winter Games Doubles 2020, Canada Winter Games 2023 and/or compete in current 2018/19 NACA playdowns. Teams will set their own junior spiel schedules in events across Alberta with their coaches.
On ice coaching to be provided by Sarah Brown and Heather Nedohin. Additional on ice coaches may include David Nedohin and Alison Thiessen with possible elite curler appearances from Joanne Courtney, Brendan Bottcher and/or Brad Thiessen.
Parent or team coaches are encouraged to participate on ice as much as possible for the sessions. Coaches will need to be certified for on ice coaching at NACA or provincial events. We strongly encourage that someone on the support unit of the team GET CERTIFIED...be part of your child's curling journey. See the NACA website for coaching clinics.
Juniors will be confirmed enrollment by mid July.
