Sherwood Park Curling Club (SPCC)

The curling club in Sherwood Park started in 1963 at the Broadmoor Golf Club (BGC). At the time there were four sheets of ice with a ladies’ and mens’ league. The rink was operated by Strathcona County and curling stayed at the BGC facility until 1979.

In 1979, the Glen Allan Recreation Complex (GARC) was built which included a curling rink and lounge, a hockey arena, two fitness centres, a whirlpool and sauna. Even though the Ladies’ and Mens’ leagues then moved to this facility from the Broadmoor Golf Club, the Strathcona County continued to manage the curling rink operations.

In the spring of 2000 the Sherwood Park Curling Club formed a committee to develop a business plan. This plan would include management of the curling facility and its concession. A few years later, in the fall of 2003, the ‘new’ Sherwood Park Curling Club (SPCC) was created.

For the next 10 years, 2003 - 2013, SPCC grew with a variety of leagues and programs each year expanding to over 800 members.

In 2014, the SPCC was close to 1000 members and offered programs and leagues on every night of the week and host to many NACA events.

The SPCC was host in 2016 to the Grand Slam of Curling Champions Cup. With over 225+ volunteers, the SPCC members were able to demonstrate their enthusiasm for the sport and their commitment to the curling community in Strathcona County.

During the Fall 2016, the GARC revitalization renovation project was completed and the SPCC joined in celebrating the grand re-opening of the complex. For the SPCC, this included the change of the sand based bottome to a concrete surface, alterations of the brine lines to run in the direction of the sheets, expansion of the SPCC locker room, installment of overhead cameras on all 8 sheets and the modernization of the upstairs viewing gallery, lounge and meeting room. A complete beautification of the Curling Lounge included fireplace & soft seating area, lounge tables & chairs, upgraded bar & concession service area; expansion of a equipment & coat area and lounge storage room.  The lounge has over 25 TVs which creates an entertaining social area for all GARC sport user groups. The GARC building is barrier free and the SPCC offers all abilities to freely particpate on ice with wheelchair accessibility.

Our SPCC membership continues to grow with new leagues and programs being offered.  Currently, the SPCC had 1100 active members. There are constant efforts to increase youth participation and in the 2016-2017 season the SPCC provided learn-to-curl school programs to over 3400 students.

The SPCC will be celebrating 55 years of curling in Strathcona County during the 2018/19 season!

The SPCC hosts 20 full leagues and programs weekly. Our leagues cater to ladies, men, mixed, juniors, seniors, and adult beginners. We are pride ourselves on educating and promoting the sport of curling in our community.
